Styling my resume with code

So I've been using Overleaf for some time now to manage my resumes. It allows me to have a base version and am able to programatically update it based on what role I'm interested in.

Setting up Postgres on WSL

So for a recent project, I've been setting up Postgres on my laptop (Ubuntu 18.04) and desktop (Windows running Windows Subsystem Linux 16.04), making sure to be able to develop on both. I followed a few different guides, but this is what ended up working for

Plotting the Course vs. Bushwhacking

I know that I should think things through before I start working on a problem, but that doesn't seem to stop me from doing it right now. I understand perfectly that if I think things through, I might be able to solve the problem with less effort, but

Debugging Database Version Control Tools Cross-platform

Fixing my Liquibase On my personal projects, I usually end up try to write in a way that can be run on multiple platforms for development purposes.  Deployment is almost always on a linux server/container for production, but for working on my project, I wanted to be able to

Debugging a python install on Windows Subystem Linux (WSL)

So I started out cloning some repo, realizing I needed python, using the windows version, then realizing I should install linux the "normal" way. I ran into a few issues when running "pip install" and whatnot. 1. Header files /env/include/python3.6m -I/usr/include/

Asking Why

Note: this is more of a journal-y post than a software one. I'm working on trying to develop a system of mindfulness in coding. It's kind of a weird area to be in right now. I'm telling myself that it's worth it,

Learnings

I decided recently that it'd be valuable to keep a running list of things that I've learned in the web dev world (or software engineering more broadly).

`_.get` Typings by Example

The other day, my team had an issue with an API endpoint where we were expecting a certain payload type, and we weren't receiving an object that differed from the contract we had developed/expected. Our team decided it was more efficient to adapt our handler than to

Pepper Refactoring

How I Quit My Job and Put My Belongings in the Ngrx Store-Devtools

So if you're into Angular, and you're into redux, and you're into debugging & testability, @ngrx/store-devtools might just be for you! I ran into a really frustrating issue that came up and I figured I'd share it in case anyone else

But why tho As a very amateur photographer starting to play around with various styles, one that I'd always admired and wanted to figure out was that of the timelapse. I was inspired from the /r/timelapse community, and decided to give it a shot on my own,

What have I done?

So I wrote some janky bash script to take a picture with a USB webcam every 2 minutes when I ran into a SEGV error.

Labor Day II: Work Reloaded

Hey non-existent readers, it's been a while. In fact, it was a year ago that I made my last post, so I figure it's time for an update. I wanted to do a quick update! I've been pretty silent recently because I've

Onboarding as a Junior Dev / Intern (a few tips)

Happy Labor Day Weekend, everyone! Of course, this being the start of the second week of my internship, I can't stop thinking about labor and the beginning of my career as a software engineer. Much has happened in the first week of my work at Maxwell Health, so

The Great Hunt Ends

Hey everyone! I'm finally back from my week in Vermont, where I've spent an entire week doing...well...absolutely nothing. It was wonderful. I'll go into why it's important to step away in a soon-to-follow blog post, and maybe provide some tips

The Great Hunt Begins

I'm guilty of not having posted in quite a while -- super sorry about that -- because I've been kinda busy with the 5th quarter of the Web Development Immersive course: Job Hunting. This post will cover the final chapter of my time at General Assembly,

Turning Down for Angular

Here's my little prelude to the awesome-tude. I had a really great week so I'm working hard to channel positivity and happiness. We're entering the phinal faze here at General Assembly's Web Development Immersive course, and the excitement is tangible. You could

Never Compromise Who You Are

Prelude What do you mean, Andrew? *full disclosure, I wrote most of this post somewhat inebriated and angry at the "system". I've since redacted some of the more incomprehensible rage-speak, so hopefully this still makes sense-ish. I mean don't fucking compromise yourself. There'

Week 3 & a Hackathon

GOOD MORNING, WORLD! Holy crap this week was really cool. This post is going follow mostly the same format as before, but this week was "Project Week", so we ended up building something from scratch during most of the class times. Once we'd presented on Friday,

Week Two (+ One Day)

There's going to be a lot less content in this post, as I'm frantically hammering the keys in order to get it out by my deadline of 9PM on a Monday night. Getting closer to the start-of-week goal I've set for myself, but hey,

The Metamorphosis (Part I)

I Will Become a Developer Yee Haw. I've decided I'd like to reinvent this blog as a documentation of what I've learned. It'll both help others to understand what a Web Development Immersive program looks like, how a student like myself progresses
